Probability begins with Possibilities

Before children calculate probability, they should first learn to see possibilities.

In mathematics, we call this the sample space, the complete set of outcomes that could occur.

It sounds simple.

Yet this is where some of the most valuable thinking begins.

When a child spins an arrow, rolls a D12 die or designs a game, the first question should not always be:

“What will happen?”

A better question is:

“What could happen?”

That shift matters.

It encourages children to:

Identify every possible outcome.
Check whether anything has been overlooked.
Understand whether outcomes are equally likely.
Organise possibilities before making predictions.
Recognise that incomplete information can lead to poor conclusions.

This is not merely a probability skill.

It is a way of thinking.

In business, science, public policy and everyday decision-making, we often make mistakes because we consider only the most obvious outcomes, and ignore the less visible ones.

Through the UNBOX Probability & Randomness Lab, I want children to develop the habit of mapping possibilities before jumping to answers.

A spinner or a die may be a simple object.

But the question “What are all the possible outcomes?” can train a child to think more completely, more carefully and more intelligently.

Probability does not begin with calculation.

It begins with imagination disciplined by logic.
